The healing parts of sage are its leaves and young twigs, and to preserve all the useful ingredients, they should be picked before blooming. It is very important to do this properly because it’s leaves are rich with carbohydrates, cellulose, tannins, and proteins. Apart from this organic substances, they also contain a lot of iron and calcium, and they are especially rich in vitamin A. However, the most important of all ingredients is essential oil.
Sage has a characteristic to constrict, and that is why it is so efficient with diarrhea and stomach aches and cramps. To prepare the tea it is enough to put half a teaspoon of leaves in one cup of water, and for the therapy to provide the best results, it is recommended to drink two cups a day, with small sips.
Sage is also effective in treating diseases of respiratory organs because it improves the ejection of mucus. To prepare this tea, a whole teaspoon of leaves is mixed in a cup with hot water, it should be cooked for five minutes and left to stand with a lid for ten more minutes. The effectiveness of sage which has been recommended by herbalists many centuries ago has gotten it’s official scientific confirmation that it improves memory.
In fact, scientists from Newcastle did a research with healthy individuals from 18 to 37 years old, they gave capsules with sage oil to one group of examinees and placebos (sunflower oil) to the other. It turned out that the group that took sage oil showed better results on memory tests.
After these results, scientists got more interested in doing researches on sage as a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease. It is already discovered that this plant inhibits acetylcholinesterase, which has a negative effect on memory. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia throughout the world, so finding the cure would be a revolutionary breakthrough. Scientists believe that sage has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and hormone-like characteristics, which can help treat this disease.
Sage is an unavoidable ingredient of any medication that is used for mouth rinsing and for throat inflammation. Tannin that comes from sage strengthens the mucous membranes, while essential oil has an antiseptic effect.
